Start with strong foundations
KS1 ยท Years 1-2Year 1
Phonics-led reading and the first steps of writing, grammar, spelling and vocabulary โ decoding, common exception words and fluent simple sentences are the backbone of the year.
Year 2
Consolidating phonics into fluent reading while comprehension, sentence variety and punctuation become the year's real focus.
Build fluency and reasoning
KS2 ยท Years 3-6Year 3
The step up into KS2 โ reading moves toward analysis (author's choices, fact vs opinion) and writing gains real structure through paragraphing and the writing process.
Year 4
Comparison enters both Reading and Writing โ comparing characters and texts, and writing with real cohesion and structure across a paragraph.
Year 5
Structural and language analysis join theme and character work, formal/informal register enters writing, and vocabulary grows into a much bigger strand โ nuance, idiom and shades of meaning.
Year 6
The KS2 milestone year โ every strand reaches its fullest primary form (viewpoint, character development, the complete punctuation range) before the shift into secondary English.
Develop secondary mastery
KS3 ยท Years 7-9Year 7
Secondary English begins here. Reading and Grammar shift from mechanics toward analysis, and Literature becomes its own strand alongside Reading, Writing, Grammar & Language, and Vocabulary.
Year 8
Building on Year 7 โ reading and literature analysis go further into rhetoric, literary movements and context, and writing extends into reviews and formal argument.
Year 9
The GCSE preparation year. Rather than separate subject strands, everything organises around the two GCSE subjects that fully split apart in Year 10: Language and Literature.
Prepare for GCSE success
GCSE ยท Years 10-11Year 10
The point where English fully splits into its two real GCSE subjects โ English Language (Paper 1: creative reading and writing, Paper 2: viewpoints and perspectives) and English Literature.
Year 11
GCSE mastery and exam preparation across both English Language and English Literature.
