Write to construct an argument, persuade, deliver a speech, inform through an article, review something honestly, and write formally — recognising what all these real-world forms share, and where each needs its own approach.
'Transactional writing' means writing with a clear real-world purpose and audience — it 'transacts' something between writer and reader. Argument, persuasion, speech, article and formal writing all share core skills (clear structure, appropriate register, evidence). New at Year 8 is the REVIEW: a distinct transactional form that must balance genuine personal opinion with fair, specific evidence — unlike pure persuasion, a good review doesn't just push one conclusion, it evaluates honestly, including flaws.
“A film review: 'The performances are genuinely moving, particularly in the quieter scenes — but the plot's final act rushes so badly that much of that earlier emotional work is undermined. Worth watching, but be prepared for a disappointing ending.'”
Unlike a purely persuasive text (which pushes one conclusion), this review balances a specific strength (moving performances) against a specific weakness (rushed ending), giving the reader a genuinely useful, honest judgement rather than one-sided persuasion — the defining feature of the review as a transactional form.
