Evaluating a text means forming and justifying a judgement about how EFFECTIVE it is — not just describing what it does, but assessing how well it does it, and why. A strong evaluation is never just an opinion ('I liked it' or 'it was boring'); it's a judgement backed by specific evidence and reasoning, and it usually acknowledges both strengths and weaknesses rather than being entirely one-sided.

“The opening line grips the reader immediately, but the pacing slows considerably in the middle section, weakening the tension the writer had built.”

This is a genuine evaluation: it makes a specific judgement (the opening is effective, the middle is less so), and could support each part with evidence from the text. Notice it isn't purely positive or purely negative — it balances a strength against a weakness, which is what a mature evaluation does.
