Character analysis means examining who a character is, and — just as importantly — HOW a writer builds that impression for the reader. Writers reveal character through several methods: direct description, dialogue, actions, other characters' reactions, and how a character changes over time. Strong character analysis always names a specific trait, explains how it's shown, and supports this with a precise piece of evidence.

“Despite losing everything in the fire, she thanked the firefighters with a steady voice before turning to comfort her frightened neighbour.”

This single sentence reveals resilience and selflessness — not through direct description ('she was a resilient person'), but through her actions in a moment of personal crisis, which is a much more convincing way for a writer to show character than simply telling the reader.

Why is 'the character was brave, because the text says he was brave' a much weaker piece of analysis than 'the character's bravery is shown through his decision to stay on the sinking ship to help others escape first'?
