Antonyms

💡Understand

An antonym is a word that means the opposite of another word. Antonyms are useful for two reasons: they help you understand a word by contrast (knowing 'brave' is the opposite of 'cowardly' sharpens your sense of what 'brave' really means), and writers use them deliberately to create contrast, tension or balance in a sentence. Not all opposites are equally 'opposite', though — some pairs are exact opposites, while others are only loosely contrasting, which is worth noticing.

“The two brothers could not have been more different: one was generous, the other miserly.”

'Generous' and 'miserly' are antonyms placed deliberately side by side. The contrast makes both words feel stronger than if either had appeared alone — the sentence's whole structure depends on the reader recognising them as opposites.
