Punctuation for parenthesis and lists | Year 5

PARENTHESIS is extra information added to a sentence, marked off by a pair of brackets, dashes, or commas. A SEMICOLON can separate items in a list when the items themselves already contain commas, to avoid confusion.

“The trip (which had been planned for months) was finally cancelled. We visited Leeds, a city in Yorkshire; Bristol, a city in the southwest; and Glasgow, a city in Scotland.”

"(which had been planned for months)" is parenthesis, using brackets. The semicolons in the second sentence separate three list items that each already contain a comma, preventing confusion about where each item starts and ends.
