Understanding a text | Year 2

💡Understand

Understanding a text means more than just reading the words. We can RETRIEVE facts (find them written down), SEQUENCE events (put them in order), PREDICT what might happen next, and INFER things the story doesn't say directly, using clues.

“Dark clouds rolled in, and Ben grabbed his umbrella just before he left.”

We can retrieve that Ben has an umbrella. We can also predict it's about to rain, using the clue of the dark clouds — even though the story never says the word 'rain'.

"Lily's cat is called Whiskers." What is the cat's name?

💡 The answer (Whiskers) is written directly in the sentence.

Question 2

"The sky turned grey and the wind picked up." What might happen next?

💡 We're using clues to guess what could happen next — that's predicting.

Question 3

"First Tom woke up. Then he ate breakfast. Then he went to school." What happened after breakfast?

💡 This is about the order events happened — sequencing.
