Year 1 β€” Reading

Reading fluency

Read simple sentences smoothly, with good expression, and get better every time you read them again.

πŸ’‘Understand

Fluent reading means reading smoothly, not too slow and not too fast, like you're really talking. When we read a question, our voice should go up at the end. When something is exciting, our voice can show it!

β€œ"Is that a dog?" she asked.”

Because this sentence has a question mark, we read it with our voice going UP at the end β€” just like when we ask a real question out loud.

πŸ”Spot it

How should your voice sound when you read each sentence?

Question 1

Where is my hat?

πŸ’‘ The question mark tells us to read it like we're really asking.

Question 2

Look out!

πŸ’‘ The exclamation mark tells us this is exciting, so we read it with energy.

Question 3

The sun is warm.

πŸ’‘ This is just a normal telling sentence, so we read it in a calm, everyday voice.

🧠Think about it

Why does reading a sentence again (a second or third time) help you read it better?

✍️Try it

Read the sentence in your head. How should your voice sound?

Can we go to the park?

Question 4

What is it called when we read something again to get better and faster at it?

πŸ’‘ It's in the title of this section of the lesson.

"I like ice cream."
